What expect at a bridal or dress alteration appointment

Updated: Nov 27

bridal fittings

You’ve done it! After all the searching, and searching and……. searching, you’ve finally chosen your dream dress! Now its time to make your dream dress fit like a dream.

Curious as to what to expect from a dress alteration appointment? Figuring out the details in advance can definitely check off some of those boxes for a seamless wedding/ special event.

When to start scheduling your bridal/special occasions dress alterations

I recommend scheduling your fittings 3-4 months ahead. Sometimes the dresses require more work than you may think or depending on if its at the height of a busy season. (typically March- September with weddings, proms etc). If you intend to gain or lose weight as early as 6 months prior to your big day.

These dresses especially bridal gowns have intricate designs, you may need multiple fittings with at least two weeks time in between each appointment.

What to expect

  • An Initial consult

  • I review the dress on you to assess what needs to be done

  • Take the appropriate measurements

  • Pinning and thread tracing

  • I take notes on what your dress requires

  • Give you an estimate on the cost

  • Schedule your next appointment

What to wear/not to wear

  • I recommend not wearing make-up, tanning creams, or heavy jewelry to prevent stains & snags during your fittings

  • Wear something comfortable and if you can, for a speedier appointment wear your “day of the event” undergarments under your clothes

  • Comfortable clothes that are easy to take on and off

What to bring

  • Your bridal gowns/gowns

  • "Day of the event" shoes or shoes similar in height

  • Shape-wear, or special bra

  • You'll need to consistently bring these items during every fitting any changes will/can affect the fit of your dress

    Accessories

  • You can bring your accessories during the final fittings to see if you like how the pieces pair with your dress. As a fashion enthusiast I love to give my thoughts. If you are looking for advice or suggestions.

  • I also design custom accessories as well as offer pieces for sale

  • Hair clip and ties; I recommend you bring a hair clip or tie to your fittings. It’s helpful when I need to adjust the straps or get a better look at the bodice.

Family or Friend

Bringing someone can definitely enhance your visit/ experience. They can offer tips as well as take photos. I have a seating area for them to hang out while I take my measurements and notes. Please limit your company to 1-2 additional people.

Email address

  • I usually send all my invoices via email as well as appointment reminders

How long is it?

My average appointment is about 30 minutes. However, I’d allow at least an hour for your fittings just in case.

Plan Ahead

To ensure everything goes smoothly, plan out a head so that you are always prepared for your fittings. I often allow brides/clients to leave certain items with me to ensure they don’t forget for next fittings.

If you find this on the inter- web and are considering hiring me for your next big day, contact me for more information or book an appointment today!
